The Gaming Initiative
To stay competitive in the workout equipment market, iFit wanted to create an iFit branded game which could be played on users stationary bikes after Peloton announced they were about to release an interactive game themselves. We teamed up with Immersion gaming studios and worked closely with them to build a game that would be iconic to our brand. This was uncharted territory for iFit but the whole team was very passionate about this project and turned out to be a great learning experience for all that took a part.
The user problem
Users that used the iFit platform had thousands of workout video content at their fingertips, but that content would blur together after a matter of time. Users wanted something fresh and new that they could experience but still get a great workout in.
The business problem
iFit narrowed in on POV and Studio content and have never broken our of those boundaries. Providing a gaming experience would require a large shift in mentality and engineering. The Gaming Initiative was viewed as a gateway project that could potentially open the door to third party applications such as Netflix, Spotify, Twitter, etc. which would only be accessible if they had an iFit membership.
Dashboard
The gaming initiative would be located in the bottom navigation so users can easily access all workout types in one location.
download screen // expanded view
// All game imagery are place holders because the game is development // Once the “play” icon is pushed, users will be taken to this screen where users can preview and download the game. users could also swipe through the pagination to view quick tips on how to play the game.
Info
An info page was also needed for whenever patch notes were released and to house additional game information that would be beneficial to the users.
Loading screen
Once the user downloaded the game and pressed play, the iFit app would close and the game would load. in order to have a seamless transition between the iFit app and game, a loading screen was needed so users understood that the game was loading and the application didn’t crash or freeze. The tablet hardware on our brands machines were low quality so their were quite a few restrictions and use cases we needed to design around. Ideally, the game would be built inside our iFit platform but because of size restrictions, the game needed to be developed as a third party application.
Survey
Because this project was in uncharted waters, we need as much data on the experience as possible. We danced between a few ideas of ways to do surveys and we decided to have the users fill out a survey after their gaming session before they are taken to the post workout screen. Having the survey right after the workout rather than in the post workout screen would highly increase the chances of users filling out the survey.
Post workout
Because the the game is sill in development, we had no idea how the game would play and how metrics would be displayed. All we knew was the post workout screen needed to show the in game metrics whether it was one game session, or an accumulation of multiple sessions. Once the user would press “Done”, they would be taken back to the Dashboard screen.
Calendar
Once a user finished their gaming session, when they navigate to the “Calendar”, their workout will show up in their history.
